A group of Ames residents got together over a few brews in the Winter of '95 to plan for the Ragbrai experience. Some of those present had a year or two of previous Ragbrai experience but were looking to form a new Team of cycling enthusiasts with a goal of maximising the enjoyment of the classic cross state ride. Common agreement on the biggest foe of such a goal was the sore butt experience. Having a couple registered nurses in the group, the concept of icing the sore butts came up. The fact that we were drinking many Bud Ice beers at the time(in training of course), made it only natural that Team Butt Ice became the team name. Our symbol of victory over the scourge of all Ragbrai-ers, The Sore Butt! Our respect and appreciation for the role of the Butt in the ragbrai experience lead us to involve our fellow riders in the whole victory over the saddle by awarding honorary membership via sticker or tattoo to those biker butts deserving of special recognition. Butt Ice traditions and culture developed rapidly and indeed became a highly respected and envied Team experience. The Butt-Ice members had ceremonial hats that when worn to the Friday night entertainment brought rave reviews.
