The Department of Statistics offers a test out examination for Statistics 101. The regularly scheduled time for the test out exam is the Friday before classes begin in August and January. However, other times can be arranged. If you are interested in taking the test out exam before the start of classes, you should contact Dr. Bob Stephenson, 327 Snedecor Hall, (515) 294-7805, wrstephe@iastate.edu before the end of the semester preceding the exam.
The test out exam is a 2-hour comprehensive exam covering the material on the Syllabus for Statistics 101. The syllabus lists the current text and the chapters covered as well as the specific topics that may appear on the exam. It is advisable to get a copy of the text and go over the material, including practice on exercises from the text, before you take the test out exam. There are sample exams posted on the STAT 101 Web page under Exam Material. You should look at this Exam Material to get an idea of the type of questions that are asked on exams.
You are allowed to use the pull out formula sheet that is included in the required text for the course. If you do not have a copy of this formula sheet one will be given to you when you sign up for the test out. You may not add anything to this formula sheet. You must show the formula sheet to the proctor at the beginning of the exam.
You may use a calculator for the test out exam. It is your responsibility to bring a calculator, in good working order, to the exam. Be sure you know how to use your calculator before coming to the test out exam.
The test out exam will be graded and you will be notified of your result within one week. You need a score of 70% or higher to earn a grade of T for the course. The registrar will be notified and the 4 credits of STAT 101 with a grade of T will be noted on your next grade slip.
In order to take the test out exam you must complete a Test Out Application Form well in advance of the scheduled exam date. It is advisable that you complete the form before the end of the semester preceding if you wish to take the test out exam before classes start the next semester. Forms are available from Dr. Bob Stephenson, 327 Snedecor. By completing and signing the application you agree to have the test out fee placed on your university bill. This fee is non-refundable. You are allowed one attempt at the test out in STAT 101.
