Symbolic Representation:

God saw that she was getting tired,
And a recovery was not to be.
So he put His arms around her
And whispered, "Come home with me."
With tearful eyes, we watched her suffer
And saw her fade away.
Although we loved her dearly,
We could not make her stay.
A golden heart stopped beating:
A determined spirit is at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best

Summary / Analysis:

This is a poem written by a girl, Debbie's anonymous friend in the memory of her after she died of eating disorders. This poem is a good representation of eating disorders. While reading the poem, you can feel the pain and bitterness she has experienced while she was suffering from eating disorders. You can feel the sadness and tears she had while fighting with this awful disease. You can almost feel that it is happening in you. Through reading the poem, you can experience the suffering live she has gone through. She is tired of fighting against Anorexia Nervosa because the disease has used up the last tiny bit of energy she could possibly offer. And when all the strengths are used up, she decided it's time for her to leave; it's time for her to stop suffering; it's time for her to come home with God. It illustrates in an elegant way the pain you get when you have this disease. It is very different perspective because it is all emotional. I like this poem because it touches your feelings. In government, academic or advocacy recourses, all you will find is facts, statistics, and general information, and reading the poem makes you know something about the disease that you will not be able to find in other perspectives. That's what I like about this poem.
