September 2003 updates! - look for site news Who we are:
The Central Iowa Bisexual Social Group (the "Bi Social") was founded in 1999 in Ames, Iowa. The Bi Social was started as an informal gathering for bisexual people in Ames, Des Moines, and Central Iowa. People of all genders, colors and backgrounds are welcome to attend, including students, staff and faculty of Iowa State University and the surrounding region. As a group in the past, we've had fun socializing, and we continue to work to build a sense of community for bi people in Iowa.*Meetings of the Bi Social:
The Bi Social is open to bisexuals and their friends, including gays, lesbians, transgender, straight and questioning people. Gatherings are informal, usually at a local restaurant, with time set aside for announcements. There is no fixed agenda; socials usually last for two hours (although people are welcome to stay for as long as they like). In addition to the restaurant gatherings, we've had some success in the past with bi-oriented videos in the afternoons of the Social. When Do We Meet?
During the ISU school year, Bi Socials have been scheduled usually for the third Sunday of each month, starting at 5:30pm. This is due to change to better meet the needs of bisexual people in central Iowa - if you have a time or locale you prefer, please let me know!Other Activities:
While the Bi Social was started just as a social event, some members are involved in a variety of related activities. Projects include:
- BECAUSE 2004 The annual Midwestern conference on bisexuality is coming to Iowa in March 2004!
- MBLGTACC The Midwest Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Transgender and Ally College Conference is being held at ISU in February 2004.
- Library Book Donations - the group has helped the Ames Public Library acquire more books about bisexuality. Update: With a new Bi Resource Guide available, we might want to do this again.
- Bi Resources Fund-drive - Philanthrofund Foundation in Minneapolis has set up an endowed fund for education and advocacy about bisexuality in Minnesota, North and South Dakota, and Iowa. (Donations now go to build the size of the endowment.)
Please note - there is no obligation to become involved in any of these activities. Just show up and enjoy yourself!
How Do I Join?
To join, all you have to do is join the Bi Social Mailing List to be informed about upcoming socials and related activities, or you can contact us by mail or by phone (see address and phone number below). There is no membership fee or dues; the Bi Social operates on voluntary donations of members (and we actually work to have only as much structure as we absolutely need).
*(NB: the Bi Social is not a "swingers" group; not that we have anything against swingers; this is intended as a guide to match our group to your interests.
