Scholars/Interns Announced!
Genetics-Fung Incoming Freshmen Scholarship
- Incoming freshmen in Genetics are automatically considered for this scholarship. Transfer students are not eligible for this scholarship.
- The scholarship is for $1000 per year, continuous for four years, totalling $4000. Students will receive $500 per semester as long as GPA and major are maintained.
- Recipients will be chosen using available data, such as ACT/SAT scores, high school GPA, class rank, etc. This is not a need-based scholarship. It is in students' best interest to provide as much data as possible when applying to Iowa State.
- A recipient will be chosen by committee and notified via mail.
- Students may be asked to proved a short paragraph explaining why they chose Genetics as a major. Students will be notified by mail if they have been asked to provide such a paragraph.

Heimbuch Scholarship
Student must be at least a sophomore in standing.
Preference given to those who have received this scholarship in the past.
Zoology, Biology and Genetics majors may apply but preference is given to Zoology students.
Minimum of one (1) $1000 award given each year.
Minimum GPA of 3.00 or higher.
Students must be full time.
Students must be Iowa residents.
Students may not receive the award for more than three years.

Darlene and Melvin Larsen Genetics, Development and Cell Biology Scholarship
Student must be an undergraduate majoring in Genetics, Developmental and Cellular Biology (or a major supported by this department).
Students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale.
Preference is given to students who demonstrate leadership skills as evidence by involvement in on campus activities, organizations, etc.
Preference is given to students who demonstrate financial need.
Award is $1000 per year, for a maximum of four years.

Fung Scholarships
Award given to a student in Genetics.
One (1) $500 award is given yearly, for a total award amount of $2000, to the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior with the highest GPA.

Internships Open to Genetics majors
The Department of Genetics, Development, and Cell Biology is accepting applications for summer research internships for the summer of 2009. Internships provide opportunities for fulltime hands-on research experiences for ISU undergraduate students working in genetics research. Participants are expected to work 40 hours per week and enrollment in summer courses is discouraged. Internships are for an eight-week period and a stipend of $3500 will be provided. Applications are due Monday, February 16th, 2009.

George Washington Carver Interns Sought
Intern Expectations
- Work with your mentor in the first week of the program to develop project goals and objectives.
- Spend a minimum of 40 hours a week on research projects and internship activities.
- Schedule regular meetings with your mentor at least once every other week.
- At the end of the program interns will be required to make an oral or poster presentation to present the final results of their research.

George Washington Carver Internship Program
New Scholarships available for students majoring in Science or Mathematics
Several new scholarships are available for the Spring (2009) and Summer (2009) semesters through IMSEP (Iowa Math Science Education Partnership, http://www.iowamathscience.org/) . The ISU IMSEP Scholarships are administered through the ISU Center for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Education (CESMEE). The scholarships are for math and science majors who are in the ISU pre-service teacher program. This includes students in the MAT program in science education and students in math licensure M. Ed. program.
The deadline for submitting applications for the Spring semester is November 21, 2008 and March 2, 2009 for the Summer Sessions. Students who fit the criteria and are interested in applying for a scholarship can download the information and submit an on-line application form at http://hs.iastate.edu/imsep. Attached to this memo are a flyer and an information card. For details, please contact any member of the ISU IMSEP/CESMEE committee.

The scholarship supports individuals who are pursuing a career in natural resources. Preference will be given to those obtaining a degree in environmental education, cultural or historical interpretation, or outdoor recreation.

Research and Development Summer Intern Program at Dow AgroSciences
R&D internships are available in several chemistry, biology and computer science related disciplines, including (but not limited to) biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, plant breeding, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, surface chemistry, engineering (chemical, biomedical, material, or optical) and informatics (bio and chem). All R&D lab-based internships will be located at our global headquarters in Indianapolis, IN and field internships will be located at any one of our 15+ field/breeding stations located throughout the US. This is a paid internship (salary is based on year completed in school and any relevant experience), expecting 40 hour/week work schedules for 10-12 weeks during the summer months. Housing is significantly subsidized and provided to any student whose permanent address is greater than 45 miles from our site.
