Minutes from December 18, 2002
Hunziker Auditorium, Jacobson Building
Present: Catherine Fox, Ann Thompson, Connie Post, Claudia Baldwin, Rohini Vanchisuaren, Diane Debinski, Julie Manning, Mikie Walker, Marcia Purdy, Julie Roosa, Penny Rice, Laura Dusselier, Virginia Blackburn, Caroloyn Heising, Liz Beck, Gail Wallace, Deb Parker, Diane Bystrom, Hannah Clayborne
I. Issues/concerns to be brought forward?
--Linda Brinkmeyer resigned as the representative from the P & S council
to UCW, they will appoint a replacement for spring semester.
--On-going dialogue with Dr. Hill, Dr. Englin, Randy Alexander, Penny Rice and
students regarding depiction of women on mural located in Willow Hall.
II. Subcommittee Reports:
Arrival of Children-Connie Post
The goal for this sub-committee is to have the Board of Regents vote on the
policy at their March meeting in Ames. The committee requests participation
of UCW members at this meeting. If the policy is approved by the Board of Regents:
--Both parents will receive time-off from work
--Create a family friendly environment at ISU
--ISU will be the first of the three regent institutions to implement a plan

College of Engineering-Carolyn Heising
--Judy Vance is in the process of interviewing female faculty to find out why
they left the university.
--It was reported that there were no women faculty hired in eight different
departments in the College of Engineering.
--Charles Glatz, Chair of Chemical Engineering Department continues to provide
support and guidance to committee members in terms of how to address the "politics"
in the College of Engineering.
Institutional Data-Liz Beck
As a result of a r meeting with Provost Ben Allen, Associate Provost Susan Carlson
and Liz Beck to discuss the collection process of data related to women on campus,
Mark Chidster, Assistant to the President for Budget Planning and Analysis has
decided to schedule a meeting with representatives from the following areas
( i.e. University Committee on Women, ISU Women and Minorities Committee, Presidents
Committee on Diversity Matters, Office of the Provost, Office of the President,
Office of Institutional Research) to address this process as is relates to women
and ethnic minority groups on campus.
Faculty Status-Diane Debinski
--Carolyn Heising, Diane Debinski, and Jackie Litt are in the process of requesting
a grant for "institutional change". Due date for application is May
2004.
--Jackie Litt, Judy Vance, Connie Hargrave, Patrick Barr, Walt Gmelch, Herman
Blake are members of a taskforce created by the Provost to review issues related
to recruiting women faculty and ethnic minorities.
Graduate Students-Gail Wallace
James Bloedel, Dean of the Graduate School thanked the sub-committee for their
report on the status of female graduate students on campus.
Merit Staff-no report
Title IX/Gender Equity-Penny Rice
Senior Women Administrator position is still not filled after being "open"
for the past six months because of this opening there has been no representation
at Big XII conferences. The committee plans on sending a letter to the Presidents
Office requesting information about their plans on filling the position. .
III. Womens Leadership Consortium:
The sub-committee submitted a request to Provost Allen to support two initiatives
(i.e. SLIC and Administrative Internships for 2003-004) for leadership development
for women on campus.
IV. Mural in Willow Hall:
On-going dialogue with Dr. Hill, Dr. Englin, Randy Alexander and Penny Rice
and students regarding depiction of women on mural located in Willow Hall. Penny
will continue to keep us abreast of decisions regarding this situation.
V. Provost Search Status:
Due to the selection of Ben Allen as the new Provost, the committee discussed
their options in addressing concerns about the search process. The committee
decided to invite the President to a future meeting to discuss issues pertaining
to the selection process for several key positions on campus.
VI. Spring Semester Meetings:
Members were encouraged to submit dates/times for
spring meeting times to Marcia Purdy
