New Business
Update on UCW brochure: Penny Rosenthal presented a rough draft of the brochure and asked for feedback and assistance. UCW mission and goals will be included as written in last years brochure. A selected history and achievements will also be included. It was suggested that we do not place the Chairs name as a contact, since this changes from year to year. The Provosts Office will be the contact point for correspondence and communication. Judy Dolphin will provide Penny with a brief description of the Data and Assessments activities, Penny will write one for Networking and Outreach and Theresa will forward one for the Provosts Relations Working Team. Erin Rosacker suggested making the brochure more exciting and appealing to hopefully get people to want to be involved. Members of UCW agreed to send personal quotes to include in the brochure about their experience with UCW. The brochure will be dated and an updated brochure for the next meeting.
Update on UCW website: Penny Rosenthals program assistant, Rob Wiese, has agreed to update the UCW web site. Penny has emailed with Tanya Zanish-Belcher who previously managed the site and access will be given soon. Site updates will begin with updating the membership and the working teams information.
Update on Womens Leadership Symposium: Penny Rosenthal reported that the students interested in coordinating a symposium valued the information provided by UCW. They will explore the possibility of working with the Womens Center to create something during Womens Week.
Updates on Ongoing Topics
Faculty Conduct Policy: Leslie Bloom sent a letter to the Committee requesting feedback on the Faculty Conduct Policy. Review meetings were scheduled in December 1999. It is not known where the policy sits currently, but assumed that there have not been any changes in the policy as reviewed. The Provost Relations Working Team will bring this topic up at the next meeting, January 25, 2000.
Strategic Plan: Theresa McCormick shared the December 10, 1999 letter written to President Jischke voicing UCWs concerns with the current draft of the Strategic Plan. The members present were delighted with Theresas creative wording to express our deeply felt distaste for the plan. Theresa will forward a copy of the letter to all UCW members.
Administrative Searches:
Dean of Agriculture search ended with no consensus on one candidate. Provost Richmond has gathered a small task force to work together to begin search process again.
Director, Administrative Data Process Blue Maas reported she was able to attend the first candidate and highly recommended her. Blue also stated that she is no longer able to continue to attend interview sessions and requested that other UCW members volunteer their time. Linda Charles and Elena Polouchkina volunteered.
Director, Sponsored Programs Two candidates have been announced. There was some confusion about the opening/announcing of this position and the presence of candidates already.
Fall Reception for New Hires 2000
Julie Ham will be coordinating a fall date for the Provost and President Jischke. Penny Rosenthal, UCW Chair 2000-2001 will follow-up on the status during the summer transition of UCW.
Working Teams Reports
Data/Assessment: Judy Dolphin and Deb Muenchrath reported there will be a report ready for the next meeting. Deb was also happy to report that Agronomy had gone from 3% female faculty to 6.6% female faculty! Deb was also happy to report she was one of the new faculty members hired for a tenure position. Congratulations Deb!
Networking & Outreach: Elena Polouchkina and Penny Rosenthal suggested that UCW purchase a copy of the next edition of the Story County Human Services publication, Help Central. This publication contains information on many of the exact services/offices Networking & Outreach planned to contact with our survey. It was suggested that the Help Central Manual be placed in the Womens Center as a resource and referral for women on campus.
Provost Relations: The December 1999 meeting with the Provost included discussion on the Family Medical Leave/Maternity Leave Policy. Pam Thomas will forward information on the maternity leave with the Provost. Theresa McCormick has received feedback from the January 7, 2000 article in Iowa Insider on the Family Medical Leave Policy a woman in the College of Business wanted to know what UCW was doing about the issue. Further discussion with the Provost will occur. Linda Charles suggested that this might be an ideal time to forward our ideas on the policy to Carla Espinoza. Linda indicated that Carla is the process of formulating how leave is being used/looked at.
There was also discussion with the Provost on a Multicultural Center. Pat Miller forwarded research from 1997-98 when open forums and surveys were distributed across campus on the topic of a Multicultural Center. The vision at this time lacked a clear understanding of what a multicultural center is and a general consensus was not reached.
