University Committee on Women Meeting Minutes

April 9, 1998

Present: Evans, Bock, Stoehr, Thomas, Froyd, Chervinko, Dolphin, Phye, Lampkin, Galyon, Svatos, Bystrom, Miller, Zanish-Belcher

Guests: Debra Amenson, Denise Vrchota, Thomas Hill & Carole Custer

Searches:

The recommendations for the Dean of the Library have been submitted to the Provost. Linda Galyon reported that the Steering Committee and Search Committee had selected candidates for the Women's Studies position, and 1 or 2 of them may visit again. There was a brief discussion concerning the second interview for an LAS candidate. Alison Lampkin described several searches currently going on in Human Development/Family Studies. Andy Bock described the search for a Collections Officer in the Library.

Gender Equity Subcommittee:

Mary Ann and Andy now have the data, which was input by a student of Tanya's, on faculty men and women, as well as minorities. Mary Ann will take a look at the data, and provide a brief report at the next Women's Faculty Network (April 22). Kathy Hanisch will be starting her project for UCW/Human Resources in early May, and will begin interviewing those who have left ISU.

Membership:

Stephanie has publicized UCW membership and has sent out a total of 47 applications for UCW; the deadline is May 6. Andy is creating an e-mail list for merit employees, and will send out the announcement as well.

Sexual Harassment:

The draft still needs additional input from Pam, Stephanie will draft it into a brochure style and it will be taken to the printers after July 1. Tanya also reported on a panel presentation that she participated in for the College of Engineering.

Take Our Daughters to Work Day (April 23):

Pam will be meeting with Jischke, Hill, Kozak (Madden and Blackwelder were also suggested) to coordinate the university sponsoring the "Take Our Daughters to Work Day." Extension and students will also be included. "Open Houses" will also be held from 2-4 at women's programs on campus.

Maternity/Family Leave:

Tanya reported that the "Task Force" had met again and had decided to create two subcommittees - one to determine ISU's current policies, and one to determine what other institutions and businesses were doing. A sign up sheet was passed around.

Committee on LGBTA Concerns:

Andy reported that the request has gone to the Provost.

Multicultural Center:

Pat reported that the Task Force is compiling its report, which will be submitted to GSB and President Jischke.

Women's Faculty Network:

Dianne reported that the group met with Ruth Mandel on Monday and had 12 attendees. The next meeting will be a breakfast meeting from 8-9 in the Cardinal Room on April 22. University award winners will be invited and recognized, and Mary Ann will give her report.

Ex-Officio:

Tanya moved that the Archives of Women in Science and Engineering be included in the UCW ex-officio membership. The motion was seconded, and the motion was approved by all present. This will be forwarded on to the Provost for his approval.

Conference on Sexual Violence:

Alissa reported on her trip to Madison for the conference, giving her first "national" presentation and seeing bell hooks speak. She hopes to also attend next year. The Women's Week Committee will be meeting later this afternoon, and Alissa will send out notices on their future meetings.

Announcements:

There will be a brown bag "Women's Spring Lunch" on April 23 which will focus on "Stress Relief" - it is open to all, and will also be included as part of "Take Our Daughters to Work Day." It is scheduled from 12-1 in the Gold Room of the Memorial Union.

Pat handed out several flyers on various speakers coming to campus (Gloria Steinem and Sally Ride next fall), and also on the equal rights amendment in Iowa.

Tanya then noted that Stephanie will be leaving as of June, and the group thanked her for all her hard work over the past three years. There will be a farewell lunch held sometime during May (now scheduled for June 10). Dianne also volunteered to hold a UCW end of the year cookout in May (now scheduled for May 17 from 5-7:30).

Deb Amenson and Denise Vrchota gave a short presentation on the Way Up conference and passed around sign up sheets. Tom Hill introduced himself and the committee introduced itself to him. Carole Custer gave a brief presentation on University marketing.
