March 11 Meeting Minutes

Present: Bock, Brooks, Bystrom, Chervinko, Espinoza, Evans, Froyd, Galyon, Henning, Lampkin, Miller, Morgan, Thiele, Thomas, Vivian, Zanish-Belcher

1. Searches:

Education Dean: Walter I. Gmelch starts July 1.

LAS Dean: Interviewing in process

Library Dean: Candidates selected are John Ulmschneider (NC State), Thomas Wilding (University of Texas at Arlington), Keith Russell (National Agricultural Library), and Olivia Madison (ISU).

Women's Studies: Two candidates have been interviewed, one snow cancellation, and one currently interviewing. The cancelled candidate will be brought in after spring break.

Health Center Director: Search committee has been formed.

2. Thomas presented the spring Women in Touch report:

175 attendees, 108 merit, 44 P&S, 8 faculty, and 15 others.

Printing costs have risen so high that other means of communication will be used to announce future WIT events (e-mail, targeted mailing, etc.).

Thomas welcomes speaker/program suggestions for fall.

3. Announcements:

Maternity/Family Leave forum: Wednesday, March 25, Noon, Gold Room.

Women's Spring Lunch: Thursday, April 23, Noon, Gold Room. Bring your lunch, cookies and punch provided. There will be a short presentation on tips for relaxing.

4. Committee reports:

Gender Equity: Bock and Evans reported that the outcomes assessment survey of why merit and P&S employees leave ISU employ is being funded by Human Resources and will be underway soon. The subcommittee is also gathering data on comparative numbers of male-female ISU faculty that will be presented at the April Women's Faculty Network.

Safety: Morgan reported that the brochure on "what you should know about sexual harassment"is nearly complete - please pass along any comments/changes/suggestions to her.

LGBTA: Bock reported that the committee proposal will be submitted to the Provost's Office by the end of March. The UCW web page is linked to this proposal.

Women's Faculty Network: Upcoming events are Ruth Mandel, April 6, Noon, 302 Catt Hall and a Breakfast meeting (April 22, from 8-9 a.m.).

Membership: Nominations for 1998-99 UCW membership are now being accepted. Chervinko announced vacancies that need to be filled are two faculty, one merit, and four P&S positions. Send your suggestions to Chervinko before May 6. There is also a need for someone to volunteer as Vice-Chair for next year.

5. Student Counseling Service presented a program on "Cultural-based Communication Preferences."
