September 10, 1997 Meeting Minutes


Members present: Chervinko, Birmingham, Bock, Brooks, S. Burke, Bystrom, Constant, Dolphin, Enloe,, Evans, Froyd, Heising, Henning, Johnson, Lampkin, Lathers, Morgan, Phye, Stoehr, Vivian, Zanish-Belcher

1. Members introduced themselves.

2. Zanish-Belcher (Chair) announced that the Provost has approved an $850 budget for 1997-1998.

3. Vivian (Vice-Chair) reported on the success of the August 21 reception for new women employees. Response was so favorable that the sponsors (UCW, the Women's Center and the Provost's Office) would like to hold a similar event each fall.

4. Lathers reported that the new search for the Director of Women's Studies will be an open one (i.e., the position will not be allied to an academic unit until a candidate is selected). The new search will begin as soon as the first search is officially closed.

5. Chervinko distributed a draft of a UCW brochure that describes the committee's programs, benefits to members, and contributions to ISU. It will be distributed as widely as possible without investing in another mailing.

6. The Women's Center Director position is currently being advertised. The applications will be reviewed starting October 6. Zanish-Belcher is a member of the Search Committee, and candidates will meet with UCW representatives as part of the interview schedule.

7. There are currently three Dean vacancies: Education, Library, and Liberal Arts and Sciences.

8. The first of two 1997-1998 Women in Touch programs will be on October 21 from 12-2 p.m. Registration materials are being mailed. Denise Vrchota (ISU Journalism and Mass Communication) will present a program focused on non-verbal communication entitled, "It's Not What You Said, It's How You Said It!"

9. Henning and Chervinko reported on plans for the 1997 Way Up Conference. It will be held October 30 and 31 at Collins Plaza in Cedar Rapids. Registration information has been mailed and is available at: http://www.mac.drake.edu/org.women/wayup.html
The 1998 conference will be held in Ames - Denise Vrchota and Deb Amenson are the ISU coordinators.

10. Dolphin announced that the Ames Human Relations Committee will be organizing study circles for "Diversity Appreciation."

11. Zanish-Belcher will send letters of appreciation to the supervisors of UCW members, if requested.

12. Sign up sheets for service on UCW subcommittees and task forces were circulated.

13. Announcements:

Brooks announced that the Lt. Governor's Committee on Diversity will meet October 21-22 at the Des Moines Convention Center. She also recommended the current Brunnier exhibit, "In a Man's Brain: Images of Women."

Bystrom discussed programming ideas for the ISU Women's Faculty Network for 1997-1998, distributed a draft schedule, and requested feedback and input.

Enloe circulated a draft of the Women's Week brochure and asked for input and suggestions.

Miller made lectures announcements.

Dolphin announced that October 19-25 is designated as the Week Without Violence.

Zanish-Belcher reminded members of the September 29 Sexual Harassment ICN program in the Pioneer Room of the Union.

Bock announced the "Coming out as an ally" panel and discussion program scheduled for October 13 in the Pioneer Room

Discussion:

S. Burke suggested that UCW research the nonexistence of job descriptions for P & S positions.

Birmingham recommended that UCW also look into the number of ISU employed in temporary rather than tenure track positions.

The next meeting will be Thursday, October 9 in the Memorial Union Oak Room.
