March 20, 1997
Present: Walker, Evans, Vrchota, Brooks, Miller, Vivian, Bystrom, Messer, Conner, Naylor-Ojurongbe, Heising, Phye, Galyon, Zanish
There were reports on the various searches:
Women's Studies (Galyon): There were two finalists that visited campus a few weeks ago. The Search Committee and the Dept. of History are working on making their final recommendations.
University Relations (Zanish/Evans): John McCarroll was hired and will be starting on April 14. It was decided that the Committee will write a letter of welcome, take him to lunch in the summer, and invite him to a UCW meeting in the fall.
Affirmative Action: The Committee doesn't know what has happened with this search. Tanya will check with Carla and see what the status is.
There was a brief discussion of the status of other ongoing searches: Education, FCS, Vice-President for Student Affairs, and the Director, African American Studies.
Special Events: Dianne will be speaking at the next Women in touch. There was concern over whether Depts. will pay for people to attend (the last series was considered entertainment). The evaluation of Debra Marquart was very positive.
Membership: Although Stephanie was absent, it was decided that UCW should go ahead and start advertising for membership next year.
The Provost may be coming to a UCW meeting -- May 1st. Some of the questions for him will be concerning spousal support, the percentage of awards status, UCW budget, and concern over retiring women Deans.
There was also a brief discussion of the survey. Nancy will ask Betty Stanley of Institutional Research to provide the appropriate statistics. The information will replicate the UCW (1981-1982) report and Rita will provide some analysis of the numbers.
Isolation Task Force (Vivian): There have been three lunches, a laundry list of contact people has been created and there will be a potluck at Mary ann's on March 26 (5:30).
Upcoming Events:
Nancy Kassebaum Baker will be meeting the Women's Faculty Network on April 2 from 12-1 in Catt Ha..
The Program for Women in Science and Engineering is celebrating its 10th anniversary this week. Guest speakers are Helen Lane and Sheila Widnall.
There will be a Diversity Forum focusing on Academic Programs on March 26 in the Campanile Room at 12.
Dianne and Pat both handed out flyers and calendars.
Nancy reported that a female faculty member had been denied tenure, possibly unfairly. Nancy wrote to the Provost asking him to examine the circumstances.
UCW is also creating a homepage, and will include information on the mission, history, task forces, and membership of UCW. There will also be other links to pages concerning women on campus.
The UCW meeting for May was set for May 1, from 10-12, in Catt Hall. The Provost may attend. The next UCW meeting will be April 10, from 10-12, in Catt Hall.
There was then a discussion concerning the lack of women faculty participation in various groups. It was decided that the Women's Faculty Network, UCW, and the Faculty Senate will sponsor a get-together at the beginning of the next academic year and provide resource listings.
Take Back the Night will be April 16.
The meeting adjourned at 11:45 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Tanya L. Zanish
