November 14, 1996
Present: Espinoza, Morgan, Conner, Dolphin, Evans, Bystrom, Vivian, Brooks, and Zanish
The minutes from the last meeting were corrected.
Mary Ann reported on the Way-Up Conference, that was held in Waterloo a few weeks ago. There were seven people from ISU attending and the conference was sponsored by Hawkeye Community College. Mary Sue Coleman (President of the University of Iowa) spoke about her career path and there were panels of women discussing the following subjects: women in politics and their role; womenÌs employment and sometimes bizarre career paths. There is currently a planning committee and a private school will be sponsoring it next year. Mary Ann would like to propose that ISU sponsor it in 1998 and have it at the Gateway. She has been added to their mailing list. The ISU Administration and Provost have been concerned by the lack of ISU participation and so UCW will support It (with financial help). The conference is held the Thursday and Friday of Election week. UCW will try and form a committee and will advertise in Inside Iowa State and may possible utilize External Affairs as well.
WomenÌs Faculty Network: Tanya will be the liason to this group and will report to them about UCW. She will also see if there are volunteers for our various sub-committees.
University Relations search: The group will meet this afternoon to narrow the applicants down to a top ten. Mary Ann stated that she didnÌt believe the pool was diverse enough and so UCW members will try and locate names of individuals to be contacted for the position.
1996 Retreat: Robie reviewed the retreat sheets and created a hand-out which was passed around. If anyone has any suggestions, please let her know.
Task Force on Isolation: will be sponsoring a lunch which will be held December 6 in the Gold Room (M.U.) from 12-2. There was some discussion concerning how it should be advertised and the group then discussed the impression that Iowa makes on newcomers.
Sub-committee on Awards and Recognition: has met once and has decided to become a ÏclearinghouseÓ for information on awards. There will be information coming via the listserv.
Reports: Nancy pointed out that the last Report on the Status of Women at ISU was done in 1981. She would like to work on an updated version in the coming year and Rita has agreed to crunch numbers. If anyone would like to serve on this sub-committee, let Nancy know.
Interim Vice President of Student Affairs: Jischke has requested recommendations of candidates for this position. UCW will not nominate anyone directly, but based on CarlaÌs recommendation, will send a letter encouraging Jischke to see it as a career developing position for a woman. UCW would like to have representation on the Search Committee for the Vice-President of Student Affairs.
Finally, Nancy read a letter that supports naming the WomenÌs Center Library after teacher Wealtha Bevier.
The meeting adjourned at 11:45.
Respectfully submitted,
Tanya L. Zanish
