Collections FAQ's

What does it mean if I receive a Notice of Right to Cure?

Iowa State University is exercising their right under Iowa Law to notify you of the debt.  You have 20 days in order to cure or dispute the debt from the day of the notice.

Does a RTC affect my credit rating?

No, but if you do not get the issue resolved, it will be credit bureau reported at the point it is placed with an outside collection agency.

My account is being credit bureau reported. How do I dispute this?

ISU reports delinquent accounts to the credit bureaus when the account is turned over to an outside agency. If you would like to challenge the accuracy of an item on your credit report, and you have supporting documentation, you should do an on-line dispute with the credit bureau:

Experian - www.experian.com

The entire dispute process will be completed in 30 days or less. It is only necessary to submit a dispute to ONE bureau; the information will be transmitted to all three. This is the fastest way to have your credit report information updated.

I have a charge for collection cost on my bill. What is this?

When you accessed your billing and payment terms and conditions on AccessPlus, you agreed to pay all collection costs and reasonable attorney’s fees if Iowa State University must take action to recover any past due amounts. The charge for collection costs represents the contingency fee that each particular agency charges ISU upon receipt of payment.

I have received a call (or letter) from someone who says they represent Iowa State University. Is this a legitimate agency?
