Texts and Calculator: Calculus, 8th Ed. by Varberg, Purcell, and Rigdon. The text is required as you will need it for homework and studying. A graphing calculator is required for this class however, at times the use of calculators will be prohibited.
Course Description: Analytic geometry and vectors, differential calculus of functions of several variables, multiple integrals, and vector calculus.
Course Prerequisites: The University requires a grade of C- or better in Math 166(H) or Math 176.
Grading: Students' final grades will be determined based on the following components.
The lowest non-final exam score will be dropped as well as your lowest two quiz scores. The grading scale will be no stricter than the standard 90-80-70-60.
Homework and Quizzes: Homework assignments will be given for each section. These assignments will be collected on Friday of every week beginning the second week of classes. Quizzes will also be randomly given throughout the course of the semester.
Exams: Four in-class exams and a comprehensive final will be given throughout the semester. The exact exam dates will be announced at a later date with no less than two weeks notice.
Cheating: Cheating will NOT be tolerated. If you are caught cheating, you will receive a zero on that quiz or exam and proper actions will be taken with the university. Working in groups on homework is acceptable (even recommended), however I expect everyone to submit their homework individually with all of the problems worked thoroughly. (This means not just giving an answer.) Please do not copy a friend's assignment. It will not help you learn the material.
Attendance: Students are expected to attend and participate in class daily. If you aren't in class you won't learn anything! A general rule of thumb is no more than three absences. I will not be taking attendance; you are all adults and can be responsible.
Classroom Behavior: I expect everyone to respect their fellow classmates. This means not distracting other students during class with ringing cell phones, talking on the phone, talking with your neighbor, reading the newspaper, coming in extremely late, etc. I do not mind if you eat or drink during class, just nothing that would be distracting and please clean up after yourself.
Late Policy and Makeup Exams: Late homework and missed quizzes cannot be made up. Missed exams may be taken at a later date provided I receive at least two (2) days notice with an acceptable reason. Going home early for the weekend is not an acceptable reason, please do not ask. Make-up tests can be given for illness with a note from a doctor or care provider only.
Special Accommodations: Please address any special needs or special
accommodations with me at the beginning of the semester or as soon as you
become aware of your needs. Those seeking accommodations based on disabilities
should obtain a Student Academic Accommodation Request (SAAR) form from the
Disability Resources (DR) office (515-294-6624). DR is located on the main
floor of the
Changes: Components of this syllabus are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.
