KIM, TAE HYUN, Ph.D.

Professor Tae Hyun Kim is Assistant Professor of Dep't of Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering and Natural Resources Ecology & Management at Iowa State University. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the Han Yang University in Seoul, Korea in 1994. Dr. Kim then has worked as a Process Engineer at two companies for more than 5 years; Samsung Engineering Inc., and LG Chemical Inc. He came to U.S. in 1999 to pursue his Ph.D. degree. He studied under Professor Y.Y. Lee at Auburn University and received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2004. In 2005, he started his first professional career in the U.S. as a Chemical Engineer at USDA-ARS-ERRC (Agricultural Research Service, Eastern Regional Research Center) in Wyndmoor, PA. In 2007, Dr. Kim became Assistant Professor and this position is for full time research (50%) and teaching (50%). Dr. Kim has devoted himself to the biofuels and biorenewable research for over 10 years.
Dr. Kim’s research interest has been in Biochemical Engineering in the area of novel pretreatment, fractionation and bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass and grains into fuels, value added chemicals, food and bio-based products. Dr. Kim has developed novel pretreatment and fractionation methods for biomass using thermochemical methods including Soaking in Aqueous Ammonia (SAA), Low-liquid ARP (ammonia recycle percolation), multi-stage fractionation process using hot water and ammonia, etc. Dr. Kim has authored or co-authored a book chapter, and numerous peer-reviewed papers and presentations.
