Biorenewable Engineering Laboratory

Biorenewable Engineering Laboratory (BEL) was started in 2007, and the role of the Laboratory in multidisciplinary research has been focused on the development of green technologies for the production of biofuels, bioproducts, and other value added chemicals/foods/food additives from the various renewable feedstock, such as crops, agricultural residues, and cellulosic wastes.

Ethanol can be produced from inexpensive and abundant lignocellulosic biomass.

The biological conversion of ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass can be achieved by pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation.
Recently, ethanol is being promoted as a promising alternative fuel for transportation. The use of fossil fuels has contributed to the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere; however ethanol is a clean-burning fuel that makes no net contribution to global warming because the carbon dioxide produced by the combustion of ethanol is consumed by plant growth, which continues the carbon cycle balance in the nature.
