Iowa State Synthesis Projects

Project 1

Multidisciplinary Synthesis Option (Jenison, EFMD)
Iowa State's Synthesis Option Curriculum is established through this project, NEEDS (delivery systems, courseware studios, and the database) are used extensively. This project links engineering design and dissection to lower division courses, and provides a unifying thread for a 4 year program. A toy dissection project is used in the summer workshop and TAG program.

Project 2

Computer Integrated Civil & Environmental Engineering (Kao, Fanous, & Federle, CCE)
New Synthesis based engineering design education, NEEDS (delivery systems, courseware studios, and the database) are used extensively. This program enables context sensitive technology access and simplified models could be used in a variety of K-12 programs.

Project 3

Real-Time Programming Course (Wright and Jacobson, EE/CpE)
A course in real-time programming is offered, a key part of the Mechatronics project. The NEEDS (delivery systems, courseware studios, and the database) are used extensively. The experiments being developed during Summer 1994 target the K-12 audience.

Project 4

NEEDS/NAS Software Maintenance/Development (Martin, MSE)
Helping to build the database will encourage its use in more courses. Maintaining and developing NEEDS/NAS system enables context sensitive technology access. Helping to build and maintain the database will encourage its use in K-14 programs

Project 5

Parks Library Systems Support for National Server System (Martin, MSE)
Helping to build the database will encourage its use in more courses. The project does not require, but is enhanced by multimedia dissection. Helping to build and maintain the database will encourage its use in K-14 programs.

Project 6

ISU NEEDS Campus Coordinator (Rohach, EFMD and Martin, MSE)
Aid, engage, and train faculty in synthesis-related NEEDS activities. Helping to build the database will encourage its use in K-14 programs.

Project 7

ISU Courseware Development Studio: Basic Studio (Huston, AEEM)
The Studio develops quality courseware in collaboration with applications projects, provides training and assistance to faculty developing courseware, and enables integrated synthesis-analysis reasoning. Helping to build the database will encourage its use in K-14 programs.

Project 8

ISU Courseware Development Studio: Advanced Studio (Huston, AEEM)
The Studio develops quality courseware with strong multidisciplinary and design components, disseminates technical information, and provides training and assistance to faculty developing courseware. Helping to build the database will encourage its use in K-14 programs.

Project 9

Delivery Systems (Genalo, EFMD)
Most Synthesis courses will make use of high-tech delivery systems which are an integral part of NEEDS. The Best Practices Document will share experiences and promote increased active and collaborative learning - -skills needed for life-long learning. Used in K-14 programs (e.g. Altoona HS). Best Practices available to all.
