Bio - Dr Steffen Schmidt
Steffen W. Schmidt, University Professor of Professor Political Science at Iowa State University and associate of Nova Southeastern University, Oceanography Center.
He grew up in Colombia, South America, studied in Colombia, Switzerland, and France and speaks four languages. He obtained his BA from Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida and his Ph.D. from Columbia University, New York in Public Law and Government.
Prof. Schmidt has published seven books and over 80 articles in scholarly journals. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious teaching prizes including the Amoco Award for Lifetime Career Achievement in Teaching and the Teacher of the Year award. He is also the lead author of the most widely used American government textbook American Government and Politics Today: 1999-2000 Edition (Wadsworth Publishing) read each year by over 100,000 college students.
He is a pioneer in the use of Web-based and real-time video courses as well as the use of technology in the classroom and in August of 2000 received the Master Teacher award for his work in this area. Schmidt is a founding member of the "Computers and Information Technology" section of the American Political Science Association (APSA). He chaired the Information Technology Proposed Standards committee for the Political Science profession. He is on the board of the section on Undergraduate Education. He is also on the editorial board of the publication Political Science Educator.
He has also done extensive research in Latin America and has written about women's roles and rural life in that region including a monograph titled Latin America: Rural Life and Agrarian Problems.
He is currently conducting research on costal and seashore politics and policy. He is also desiging new multi-level college courses on Coastal Policy and International integrated Coastal Management taught on the Web. Thse will also include in-the-field experiences at seashore venues, under the water (scuba diving), and on top of the water (snorkeling and boat-based exploration and study).
Dr. Schmidt recently published the essay on "Coastal Waters Management" in Water Science, An Encyclopedia Reference Book. He also wrote four essays on coastal related subjects for the Dictionary of American History. The artciles are "Bermuda", "Long Island", "Yacht Racing", and "Coast and Geodetic Service." He is currently writing several essays on Coastal Management for the forthcoming Encyclopedia of Public Administration.
Prof. Schmidt has a weekly one-hour talk show on WOI radio (public radio) where he is known as "Dr. Politics". The show has been done live from Prague, Mexico City, Vancouver, Bogota, and other U.S. and international venues. His comments on American politics and international affairs are frequently quoted in the New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, and many other national and international publications.
Schmidt lives on a farm in Nevada, Iowa and likes to snow ski, ride hunter jumper horses, SCUBA dive, and sail large, offshore sailboats. He travels extensively in the Caribbean, San Juan/Seattle area, Boston, and Latin America.
