This web-based course focuses on the international dimensions of integrated coastal zone management, politics, and policy. First. You will look at the major "big picture" issues affecting the worlds coastal areas and oceans including global warming, overpopulation, management of human impact. We will examine seven case studies that help bring alive the grave problems of mismanaging coastal and oceanic resources - The Black Sea, Newfoundland, the Louisiana Bayou area and the Gulf of Mexico, Belize, the Marshall Islands, and Antarctica. Finally, the author of our book offers one set of policy recommendations for how to improve human interaction with the coastal, ocean, and marine life. Second. We will explore several major international conferences, treaties, and policy principles (including the Law of the Sea). Third. We will examine regional as well as selected country coastal zone policies.

After completing this course you will be familiar with the most important aspects of Integrated Coastal Management globally and will have a basis for comparison of these policies. You will also be in a position to assess the costs and benefits of different coastal zone management strategies around the world. |
