Grading:

The course grade may include a plus or a minus. Your grade will be determined by the number of points you accumulate in the course. There will be regular graded homework and a final exam. It is possible that there will be a midterm exam as well. The current course grades are available by clicking grades. Scores are listed by the last 6 digits of student social security numbers. If a score has been incorrectly recorded, you should contact the instructor.

Homework:

Homework assignments are available by clicking homework.

Prerequisites:

Permission of instructor. Prior courses in undergraduate abstract algebra and undergraduate topology should suffice.

Catalog description:

Simplicial complexes. Simplicial and singular homology groups.

Textbook:

An Introduction to Algebraic Topology, by Joseph J. Rotman, published by Springer-Verlag.

Class meetings:

The class is scheduled to meet MWF 10-11 in 118 Carver. The first class is Monday, January 10, 2005, and the last class is Friday, April 29, 2005. There are no classes on Martin Luther King Day (January 17) and Spring Break (the week of March 14 - 18). The last day to drop the course is Friday, March 25.

Tentative syllabus (subject to change):

The emphasis in the course will be on doing proofs and constructing examples.
