Background

Samsuzana is currently enrolled in PhD program majoring Agricultural Engineering at the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Iowa State University. She received a scholarship from Government of Malaysia to obtain a doctorate degree as a preparation to become a faculty member at the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia.

 

Current Research

Digital elevation model development for agricultural applications

This project investigates the procedures of utilizing elevation data from field surveys and publicly available elevation dataset to developed field DEMs for conservation planning, precision agriculture, and field automation. The study also investigates the effect of DEM uncertainties on its derived parameters such as slope and slope length for subsequence studies such as soil erosion modeling.

The study can be useful in a variety of ways. In one case, it could help land users, such as precision farmers, to utilize more accurate topographic information available from typical farm operations to improve their farming applications. In the other case, the uncertainty in measurements estimates was used for designing more efficient sampling technique that could benefit agricultural producers. Lastly this study could help decision makers improve their predictions in environmental management by understanding the effect of DEM uncertainty on applications.

 

Dielectric sensing for hydraulic fluid contamination detection

Degradation and contamination of the working fluids is a major cause of failures in hydraulic systems. Low cost sensors that give early warnings of fluid problems could add significant value to hydraulic systems by providing an opportunity to take corrective action prior to failure. This project is to investigate the variability in dielectric measurements across fluids and temperatures affected by different contaminations in order to develop a model for a sensing system.
