Degree: PhD Department: Material Chemistry and Biomolecular Materials College: Sweeney Hall Contact: Email, Homepage Currently the driving forces behind exfoliation versus intercalation are not well understood in polymer nanocomposites (PNCs), as well as structure-property relationships and their related physical mechanisms. In order to study these mechanisms we are functionalizing mesoporous metal oxide particles with alkyl groups of various lengths and blending the particles in selected polymers via melt processing. Using nanoindentations, as well as other characterization methods, on our series of polymer/mesoporous metal oxide nanocomposites we hope to make advances in determining how the interfacial properties of PNCs in general relate to the bulk behavior. |
