Quick look: Strategic planning process

Process begins

January 2004
A 41-member strategic planning committee, led by vice president for academic affairs and provost Benjamin Allen, began work on the 2005-2010 strategic plan in late January. Allen and President Gregory Geoffroy called for a well-focused plan that would sharpen Iowa State's academic focus.

Forums, focus groups

February-July 2004
Through two open forums, 20 focus groups and requests for e-mail input, the committee sought input on Iowa State's next plan. Hundreds of individuals offered their visions for the future of Iowa State. Forums: March 26 | April 29

First draft

August-September 2004
The first draft of the strategic plan was released for public comments. Provost Allen called the draft "substantive and strategic."

Second draft

September-October 2004
The second draft of the plan, released Oct. 11, reflected many of the 200-plus comments received on the first draft.

Final review

November 2004-January 2005
The latest draft of the plan was submitted to groups for final reviews. The Faculty Senate approved the plan in a unanimous vote Jan. 11. The plan also received endorsements from the Government of the Student Body and the Professional and Scientific Council.

Plan approved

The Strategic Plan for 2005-2010 received final approval in June 2005, when it was endorsed by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.

Action plans

Detailed action plans to carry out the strategic plan goals are under development.
