Students of Color The staff of the Student Counseling Services welcomes students of color to Iowa State University. Our mission is to help you succeed in your academic, professional and personal goals. Our counselors are welcoming to students of differing cultures and ethnicity, and share the goal of providing sensitive, high quality services to diverse people. SCS staff members have developed expertise in working with African - American, Latino/ Latina, Asian and Asian American, American Indian and Multi-ethnic students. The college experience on a large campus will be a challenging and growth producing experience, but may also be frustrating and overwhelming at times. Challenges include adjusting to college, missing your family, developing new friends, developing a sense of self, and meeting the intense academic demands. A large campus can feel impersonal and students at times feel invisible and unimportant. Students of color often face additional pressures: confronting negative stereotypes, explaining their culture and ethnicity to majority students, and supporting other members of their group who are impacted by the challenges. This is a time when students benefit from additional support and encouragement. SCS works closely with the staff of Multicultural Student Affairs and the College Multicultural Liaison officers to help you manage transitions and stress, overcome obstacles, and thrive at Iowa State University. All enrolled ISU students are eligible for free counseling services.
