What ID’s will I need? 
Bring two forms of identification: Primary ID must be a government-issued photo ID with signature.  Secondary ID must have a photo or signature, such as student ID.

What do the exams cover?
French and Spanish cover language skills usually learned from the end of the first semester through the second year of college study.  They include reading and listening skills, with three separately timed sections.  Go to http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/exams.html for a complete description.

How do I prepare for the exams?    
Visit the CLEP PREP CENTER on the College Board website (http://www.collegeboard.com/clep) for useful tips on assessing your readiness and preparing for CLEP exams.  Also in the CLEP PREP CENTER are individual subject study guides which can be downloaded for $10 each and the CLEP Sampler which can be downloaded free of charge.  (Prices are subject to change.)

Who should take this exam?
Students in LAS or students who are majoring in Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education are required to complete one year of college-level foreign language or its equivalent to graduate.  All other students are strongly encouraged to develop foreign language skills. Please note that native or near-native speakers of French or Spanish may not test out of the beginning or intermediate levels in these languages.  For more information, go to

What is a passing score?
In order to reach the total score you see on your score report, two calculations are performed.

First, your “raw score” is calculated.  This is the number of questions you answer correctly.  Your raw score increases by one point for each question answered correctly, and no points are gained or lost when a question is not answered or is answered incorrectly.

Second, your raw score is converted into a “scaled score” by a statistical process called equating.  Equating maintains the consistency of standards for test scores over time by adjusting for slight differences in difficulty between test forms.  This ensures that your score does not depend on the specific test for you took or how well others did on the same form.  Your raw score is converted to a scaled score that ranges from 20, the lowest, to 80, the highest.  The final scaled score is the score that appears on your score report.

What is the cost of the exam?
The total cost of $100 consists of two payments.  A $65 exam fee is payable to CLEP by check, money order or credit card.  In addition, a $35 administrative fee is payable to SCS Testing Office by u-bill, check, money order or cash.  Prices are subject to change.

What happens when I return my registration form?
You will be automatically registered and the $35 administrative fee will be charged to your u-bill.  You will need to register at least one week ahead of time.  Please bring you completed registration form with you.

How soon will I receive my results?
You receive your official score report upon completion of the exam.  Your scores are reported only to you, unless you ask to have them sent elsewhere. You can choose to have scores sent to Iowa State University on the day of the test.  This service is free of charge only if you select your score recipient at the time you test.  A $20 fee will be charged for each score recipient selected at a later date.  All passing scores for CLEP Spanish and French Examinations will be sent to the Registrar’s Office, the Dept. of World Languages and Cultures and your academic advisor.  A “Test Out” grade for the designated credit will be posted on your transcript at the end of the current or following semester.
