Student Counseling Service

THE MISSION

The Student Counseling Service (SCS) enjoys a reputation as one of the oldest university counseling centers in the United States providing services for students since 1939. The Training Program was also represented as one of the founding members of ACCTA (Association of Counseling Center Training Agents). The mission of SCS is to help students enhance their academic and personal well-being. SCS provides prevention, intervention, information and referral services to Iowa State students. These services are available to help students sort through their feelings, strengths, and options to develop new perspectives and coping skills. SCS also provides consultation and training to faculty and staff to assist them in addressing the psychological needs of students.

STAFF

SCS professional staff have doctoral and/or master degrees in counseling psychology, clinical psychology, college student personnel, or counselor education.

OFFICE HOURS

SCS is open year round and offers services from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

ELIGIBILITY FOR SERVICES

To utilize the services available through SCS, clients must be currently enrolled as ISU students. Partners and spouses of students are eligible for couples counseling, if their enrolled partner is also involved.

APPOINTMENTS

Clients schedule an appointment with a counselor for an initial assessment. This initial assessment is approximately 45 minutes in length and is designed to help students connect with the services that best fit their needs. In the case of an emergency situation a consultation with a crisis counselor is provided as soon as possible.

FEES FOR SERVICES

There are no fees for individual, couples, or group counseling services. There are minimal fees for most career, personality, and substance abuse inventories, and for credit by examination. There may also be nominal fees for involvement in some psychoeducational workshops.

PROGRAM EVALUATION

SCS is committed to offering high quality services that assist students in achieving their personal goals. To ensure this quality of service clients are provided with opportunities to evaluate the services they have received and to offer feedback on how to continue to improve those services.

OFFICE SUPPORT

All SCS counseling staff, including the interns, have individual furnished offices with windows, a desk, bookcase, filing cabinet, chairs, and table. Individual counseling sessions are conducted in these private offices. All offices contain a computer with our networked database/scheduling program. Each intern will have an e-mail account through ISU and a direct connection to the World Wide Web. All intern offices are equipped with video cameras to tape counseling sessions for supervision and a TV/VCR to view tap
