Substance Abuse Intervention

An intern completing the requirements for the substance abuse intervention Special Emphasis Area will gain competency with full assessment and screening, administration, and programming. An intern successfully completing this area will have a solid knowledge base regarding levels and types of assessment and intervention, and will be able to take a leadership role in the implementation of substance abuse intervention services at a university counseling center.

Requirements for Completion:

  • Have available up to 3 Substance Abuse Assessment hours/week, and demonstrate competency with assessment instruments by the end of the semester.
  • Attend weekly case conference focused on assessment issues.
  • Facilitate 2 Drug Education Seminars (independently or with another trainee).
  • Meet weekly with the area supervisor and the Substance Abuse Graduate Assistant to discuss issues related to the administration of the Substance Abuse Intervention Program.
  • Co-facilitate Adult Children of Alcoholics/Dysfunctional Families group if available.

Special Emphasis Project

The intern will complete a Special Emphasis Project under the director of the area supervisor. The content of the Special Emphasis Project will be negotiated with the area supervisor, but the project must demonstrate how the material relates to diverse populations. The intern will present the outcome of the project to the SCS staff in a second-hour staff meeting.

Examples of Special Emphasis Projects include:

  • Develop early intervention/self-assessment materials relevant to Intervention Services.
  • Collaborate on research regarding clinical issues in substance abuse or focused on program evaluation.
  • Train faculty, staff, or students in SA early intervention strategies.
  • Literature review or attend a conference in motivational interviewing.

At a minimum, the intern will meet individually with the area supervisor on a monthly basis to discuss issues related to the Special Emphasis Area.
