Maintain a liaison relationship (with senior staff support) with an agency such as Multicultural Student Affairs; Women's Center; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Students Services; International Educational Services; YWCA or similar organizations.

Present outreach programs for Multicultural Student Affairs, Student Support Program, Carver Academy, and Academic Program for Excellence, McNair program and the College Multicultural Liaison Officers.

Develop or refine culturally sensitive outreach programs for targeted populations. Current outreach programs include: Becoming a Cultural Explorer, Enhancing Interracial Communication and Bridging the Gap, a program that explores unearned privilege.

Networking to provide an SCS presence at multicultural events on campus. These events include Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, and the American Indian Symposiums, the Student of Color Convocation, Disability Awareness month, LGBT Awareness Week and similar events.

Special Emphasis Project

The intern will complete a Special Emphasis Project under the director of the area supervisor. The content of the Special Emphasis Project will be negotiated with the area supervisor, but the project must demonstrate how the material relates to diverse populations. The intern will present the outcome of the project to the SCS staff in a second-hour staff meeting.

Examples of Special Emphasis Projects include:

  • Participate as a facilitator for the Multicultural Leadership Summit
  • Teach a gender awareness section through Women's Center
  • Facilitate a Racial Awareness Workshop through Multicultural Student Affairs
  • Update the Handbook on the role of Culture on the website
  • Develop a cultural calendar for the diversity website

At a minimum, the intern will meet individually with the area supervisor on a monthly basis to discuss issues related to the Special Emphasis Area.

Area Supervisor: Ron Jackson, Ph.D.
