Culture

Welcome to the Iowa State University Student Counseling Service web page on "The Potential Impact of Culture on Crisis." The intent of this web site is to make available information for faculty and staff who may be in a position to give support to an international student in crisis. This information can serve as a quick reference and is intended to facilitate respectful communication in time of crisis.

  • Click here to view information about the cultures of several nations throughout the world.

The information for these pages have been collected by undergraduate students, graduate students and staff through interviews of international students and advisors, web research and literature reviews. There are links to other websites that give more detailed information and up to date news stories from the countries represented. We first looked at the countries with the most represented population here at Iowa State. We also were able to get information through personal networks. We recognize that the list of countries is not complete. We will add more information as it is completed.

The information is not intended to represent all individuals within any one culture. The information is the opinion of students from within the culture, the advisors to the student groups and is supported by web sites and published writings on the cultures. Because there are wide variations within individuals, even from the same country our culture, it is always important to allow an opportunity for the specific person to give information about what will be helpful to them.
