Career Services

The Special Emphasis Area in Career Services will focus on the following:

Delivery of Career Counseling Services

This portion of the emphasis area will focus on working with clients presenting with career issues. While all interns will typically carry one career client on their caseloads, those choosing to complete this concentration will carry 2 - 3 career clients weekly, and will be assigned career clients with complicated presentations (e.g., comorbid diagnoses).

Supervision of Career GA's and/or Practicum Counselors

The focus of this portion of the area is to gain skill in clinical supervision of career counseling. The intern will work with the Coordinator of Career Services to provide group supervision to practicum students completing the career practicum, as well as the graduate assistants that work for the career program.

Delivery of Career Outreach

Interns choosing this emphasis area will be responsible for presenting outreach programming to the ISU community on a variety of career issues. These outreach presentations might be for classes, clubs, residence halls, or Greek houses. Additionally, groups come to the career library for tours and activities to familiarize them with the career resources at SCS. Interns will also be involved in the ongoing refinement of existing outreach programming, as well as development of new programming.

Administration of Career Library/Resources

This area will provide the intern with the opportunity to gain experience in the administrative functions of the career program. This includes management of two graduate assistants and five student workers, budgetary decisions, purchasing decisions for the library, and coordination with others departments which provide career funding, most notably the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

Special Emphasis Project

The intern will complete a Special Emphasis Project under the director of the area supervisor. The content of the Special Emphasis Project will be negotiated with the area supervisor, but the project must demonstrate how the material relates to diverse populations. The intern will present the outcome of the project to the SCS staff in a second-hour staff meeting.

Examples of Special Emphasis Projects include:

  • Development of career outreach programming for special populations (e.g., racial/ethnic minorities, students with LD/ADHD issues)
  • Development of career-related web site to be used on SCS homepage; including helpful information for students, links to quality career sites, etc.

At a minimum, the intern will meet individually with the area supervisor on a monthly basis to discuss issues related to the Special Emphasis Area.

Area Supervisor: Mark Becker, Ph.D.
