By the end of this section, you should . . .
  1. Be able to recognize a structural element loaded as a beam.

  2. Be able to use the correct sign convention for internal shear force and bending moment.

  3. Be able to evaluate the internal shear force and bending moment at a specified cross section in a straight beam.

  4. Be able to evaluate the internal shear force and bending moment as a function of position in a straight beam.

  5. Be able to draw graphs showing the variation of shear force and bending moment in a straight beam.
