COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course will cover the following topics
- Axiomatic Probability Theory ( ch. 1)
- Transformations and Expectations ( ch.2)
- Standard Univariate Distributions (ch 3)
- Exponential Family; Point Estimation (ch 3, Sec 7.2)
- Multivariate Distributions (ch. 4)
- Poisson Process, Finite Markov Chains
- Sampling Distributions, Order Statistics (ch. 5)
- Convergence Concepts (ch. 5)
- Special Topics (Time permitting).

COURSE GRADE:
-
The final
grade for this course will be determined by
performance on homework assignments (10%), two midterm
exams (25% each), and the final exam (40%).
-
HOMEWORK:
- A Homework
set, containing about four problems
will be assigned on Mondays ( except for 9/06/2004,
which is a university holiday) as per the schedule given
below. The homework set is due by 5pm, next Monday
at the TA's office. Upto two of the assigned problems
will be graded. Solutions for all the problems will
be given. One of the least HW scores
will be dropped.

EXAMS:
- There will
be two midterm exams and a comprehensive final exam.
The midterm exams (typically, 2 hr. long) for the
on-campus students of both sections will be held
jointly in the evening (at a time, to be arranged).
Off-campus students must take the midterms on the
respective dates (10/12/04 and 11/29/04) unless
prior permission is taken for an alternative date(/s).
The date(s) of the final exam will be announced later.
A make-up exam is not given unless there is a
verifiable serious reason.
