MAT E 453: Physical and Mechanical Properties of Polymer

Overview of polymer chemical composition, microstructure, thermal and mechanical properties, rheology, and principles of polymer materials selection. Intensive laboratory experiments include chemical composition studies, microstructure characterization, thermal analsysis, and mechanical testing.

This class is completely re-designed with new lectures and labs in Fall 2016. The focus is on more advanced polymer physics and mechanical properties, with the empahsis of the commercial application. The lab is a completely new set of experiments including synthesis, GPC, ZetaSizer, tensile-elongation, thermal analysis and testing on commercial paints. In addition to the exam and lab report, the class also gives the students opportunity to impove their prensentation skills with the poster and oral presentation session.

Objective

In addition to the concepts and principles of physical and mechanical properties of polymers, this course will teach students the modern experimental tools to evaluate structure and performance of polymer materials. Students will then have chance to operate on the instruments in the lab, and apply the knowledge learned from textbook to experimental design. In addition, this course will help students learn how to analyze data, discuss results and present lab report. The course will include topics closely related to polymer manufacture, and offer students training with the evaluation tools used in industry. More specifically, this course will help students: - Connect the textbook knowledge with experiments; - Cover broad lab skills and polymer samples; - Develop data analysis and experimental design skills; - Learn how to write lab report and present results; - Build up teamwork, communication, writing and presentation skills.

Teaching philosophy

Teach with examples, emphasize the fundamental understanding of concept, encourage dialogue in classroom, offer opportunity for students to design their own experiment and present the results and discussions.
