ACTIVITIES AT BEAR PAW TO COMMEMORATE 120th ANNIVERSARY OF BATTLE

Commemorative activities honoring the 120th anniversary of the Battle of the Bear Paw will begin at 9:00 A.M. on Sunday, October 5, 1997, at Bear Paw Battlefield, a unit of Nez Perce National Historical Park. The commemoration will include Empty Saddle and Pipe Ceremonies hosted by the Lapwai, Idaho, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Nez Perce People.

Bear Paw Battlefield is located sixteen miles south of Chinook, Montana on County Route 240. The annual commemoration is open to the public and free of charge. Events will be a cooperative effort of the Nez Perce, the National Park Service and the Blaine County Museum.

A National Park Service Ranger will be on hand Saturday and Sunday to provide tours of the Battlefield. Tours will last approximately one hour and are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. Saturday, and after the formal ceremonies at about 2:00 PM Sunday.

The Blaine County Museum will be open to the public from 12:00 noon to 5:00 P.M. each afternoon. National Park Service Ranger Jim Magera will present a talk entitled "The Nez Perce and Lewis & Clark" at 4:00 PM, Saturday afternoon at the Blaine County Museum.

Saturday, October 4, a commemoration hosted by the Piegan Tribe of Canada will be held at Brockett, Alberta. If more information is needed regarding this event, contact the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho at (208) 843-2253. On Saturday evening, Fort Belknap Reservation will hold a Pow Wow in honor of the Nez Perce with grand entry scheduled for 7:00 P.M. at the Red Whip Center at Fort Belknap. This event is open to the public and free of charge.
