Authoritative one volume encyclopedia provides lengthy entries that describe the history and presence of numerous ethnic groups in the United States, including white ethnic groups. Now a bit dated, but still the classic.

Handbook of Hispanic Cultures in the United States (REF E184.S75 H365 1993)
Award-winning four volume set provides authoritative signed essays on the broad topics of U.S. Latino history, anthropology, sociology, literature and art. Includes numerous illustrations, tables, lengthy bibliographies.

Latino Encyclopedia (REF E184.S75 L357 1996)
Slim but authoritative six volume set covers topics, individuals, and concepts important to an understanding of Latino peoples in the United States. Longer articles signed, and with brief list of suggested readings. Coverage is best for largest Latino groups. Includes numerous black and white illustrations, photographs, and tables.

Latino Library Research Guide
Annotated list of reference books and other resources relevant to Latino research topics. Very useful as a guide to materials in the ISU Library collection; includes ISU call numbers.

Nation of Peoples: A Sourcebook on America's Multicultural Heritage (REF E184.A1 N2866 1999)
Authoritative, signed essays profile 27 major racial & ethnic groups in the U.S. and their respective histories. Latino and Asian American sub-groups (such as Puerto Ricans, Filipinos, etc.) are profiled individually, rather than grouped together and generalized. Includes statistics, and bibliographies for further reading. A useful companion to the Harvard Encylopedia of American Ethnic Groups.

Ethnic NewsWatch (Reference Area only; sign up at Reference Desk)
Unique and versatile source provides bibliographic citations and full-text articles from U.S. racial and ethnic minority newspapers, newsmagazines, and some journals. The database focus is on African American, American Indian, Asian American, and U.S. Latino newspapers, though publications from many other minority groups are included. (Click here for a current list.) Also includes a publishers' directory, circulation figures, advertising rates, and histories of individual newspapers. In English and Spanish. Coverage is from 1990 to the present. Updated monthly.

America: History & Life (ISU only)
Online history database provides bibliographic citations and abstracts on research journal articles relevant to the study of United States and Canadian history dating from prehistoric times to the present, from more than 2100 journals. Also includes citations for dissertations, book, film and video reviews. Coverage is publications from 1964-present

ERIC (ISU only)
Well-known education database leads to citations and abstracts on education-related research and reports, 1966-present. Citations with "ED" numbers are microfiche reports, most of which will be found in the Microforms Center in Parks Library. Citations with "EJ" numbers are articles in journals; enter the ISU Library Catalog and do a title search on the name of the journal to see if it is held by the Library.

Expanded Academic ASAP (ISU only)
Multi-disciplinary database contains citations and many full-text articles on current events, social sciences, and humanities. Journal coverage is from 1994 to the present, and backfiles (1980- 1993) are available for some journals.

Historical Abstracts (ISU only)
This online database provides bibliographic citations and abstracts on research journal articles relevant to the study of world history (except that of the United States and Canada) dating from prehistoric times to the present, from more than 2000 journals. Also includes citations for dissertations, book, film and video reviews. Coverage is publications from 1964-present.

PAIS (ISU only)
Online public affairs database provides access to journal articles, government documents, reports, statistics, and other resources dealing with domestic and international public policy materials on business, government, demographics, law, political science, public administration, education, and other areas, 1972-present.

PsycLIT
Online database for citations to articles, book chapters, and books in psychology, sociology, and related fields. Coverage is 1887 to the present.

SAGE Race Relations Abstracts (REF HT1501 .S3x)
Print index contains bibliographical essays on specialized international race-related topics, and annotated abstracts for journal articles and books dealing with race relations. Broad subject index. Produced by the Institute of Race Relations, London. Quarterly, 1975- .

Provides access to journal articles and abstracts in sociology and many related research fields, 1974-present.

Multicultural Perspectives: Art Education
Annotated list of library and web resources useful for finding information on art and artists from US racial and ethnic minority groups, including Latinos.

La Raza (Print copies in Periodical Room, E184.M5 R39x)
Bi-weekly newspaper from Chicago covers Chicano, Puerto Rican, Cuban American, and other US Latino regional and national news, cultural events, and coverage of Latin American headline news. In Spanish; major stories are translated into English.

Recommended US Latino Web Sites
Annotated list of meta-sites, directories, clearinghouses, e-journals, and electronic newspapers dealing with Latinos. Focus on Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and Salvadorans, Dominicans, Colombians, and Guatemalans in the US. Soon to be published in Latino Library Services, McFarland Press.

US Census Bureau
Web site maintained by the Census Bureau provides access to much recent data, publications, and a number of relevant reports. Also, the Library owns census CD-ROMs that provide quick access to recent census data on population and housing, nationwide. Older census data is available in book format in the Reference area and the general collection (the basic call number is HA201 plus the year the census took place, for example, HA201 1980). Search the Library Catalog for these materials, or ask at the Reference Desk for assistance.

La Voz de Aztlán
Interesting new e-journal provides perspectives from the "rightist faction among Chicano Studies," with viewpoints on politics, philosophy, news, and current events. Plans are to include archives of previous issues, plus a search engine. From Whittier, California; in English.

Online Citation Manuals
List of popular style manuals (such as the MLA and the Chicago) and links to their Web versions. Call numbers are also given for their print counterparts in ISU's Parks Library.

Exhaustive and authoritative online textbook provides much useful information on when and how to use the Internet for scholarly literary research. URLs to sample sites and listserv addresses are provided, along with instructions on how to make use of numerous Internet services. Includes links to other helpful sites.
