Search Engines & Directories

  • Altavista

  • One of the largest search engines (though Google, below, has now surpassed it in size) with a number of advanced search features. Also includes directory categories, similar to Yahoo, and translation features.

  • Google.com

  • Works on the principle that important, authoritative pages will tend to be those that are heavily linked by other pages. Useful for finding well-known and well-cited web pages, organized by most- to least-cited pages on your topic or search terms.

  • GoTo.com

  • This search engine combines regular search results with "pay for placement" results, meaning that companies or individuals can pay money for their web pages to appear high in search result lists. Non-paid search results are powered by Inktomi, a respected search engine that partners with other services.

  • HotBot

  • Easily allows flexible and precise searching by limiting to specific words, phrases, titles, languages, dates, and so on. Combines the services of Direct Hit, Inktomi, and Open Directory.

  • Yahoo

  • Easily one of the most popular web directories, Yahoo relies both on people to categorize sites, and on search engine results provided by Google (and previously, by Inktomi).
