  • The World Wide Web

  • Depending on one's level, an introduction to or review of basic topics such as what is the Internet and how does it work; how to understand the components of Internet addresses (and why one should care); basic navigation techniques and tools in Netscape, how search engines work and how to use them effectively; plus definitions of some of the most basic Web jargon. From the award-winning RIO tutorials, developed by the University of Arizona Library.

Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education
As defined by the American Library Association, information literacy is "... a set of abilities requiring individuals to "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information." As stated on the ALA/ACRL page linked here, the following six abilities are among the core competencies that can be demonstrated by an information literate person:

  • "Determine the extent of information needed

  • Access the needed information effectively and efficiently

  • Evaluate information and its sources critically

  • Incorporate selected information into one's knowledge base

  • Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose

  • Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access, cite, and use information ethically and legally"
