About the Project

Student Climbing Rock Wall

Iowa State's recreation facilities may soon be getting a makeover. The planning process for renovating and expanding three facilities on campus - Lied Recreation and Athletic Center, Beyer Hall, and State Gym - is now underway. As the process goes forward, this site is the place to come for information about the project and where it's headed. Stop back often to get updates, sign up for an e-mail project newsletter, or ask questions.

Major components of the project include 92,320 square feet of new space added to State Gym, renovation of several areas within State Gym and Beyer Hall, and air conditioning in the Lied Recreation and Athletic Center.

  • For more details, check out the FAQ or Resources section of the site
  • The total project budget is estimated to be $52.8 million, and it's expected to be completed in Fall 2011.

The project developed out of feedback from Iowa State University students who expressed a need for updated and expanded facilities.

  • Students are the primary users of the rec facilities; in fact, 94% of ISU students utilize one or more Rec Services programs
  • A study by the National Intramural Recreational Sport Association found that the availability of intramural and recreational sports is one of the primary factors in a student's choice of university, and students' participation in these activities contributes to their overall satisfaction and success in college

A planning committee, comprised primarily of students, is guiding the process.
