Scholarships:


The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs awards 12 scholarships annually to students who meet the criteria described below. A committee of faculty and staff select the recipients of each scholarship. Applicants should review the Tips for Effective Scholarship Applications for suggestions.

Minority Student Scholarships:

The following scholarships are available for the 2008-2009 academic year. Click on the scholarship name below to download the application for that scholarship. All application materials are due to the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs (2350 Beardshear Hall) by noon on Friday, November 30, 2007. Awardees will be notified in early February, and scholarships will be applied for the 2008-2009 academic year bill ($2,000 award, divided between two semesters).
  • Crazy Horse Scholarship: Applicants must be Native American students. First preference will be given to Native Americans from reservations.
  • Donald Smith Scholarship: Applicants must be upperclass (sophomore/junior/senior) at the time the award is applied. Each applicant must be an African American student, studying in any technical field. This award is based on need and degree progress.
  • Herta David Minority Student Scholarship: Applicants must be minority students who will be in their sophomore, junior or senior year at the time the award is applied. Each applicant must have a 2.50 grade point average at the time of application.
  • Lawrence Shindel Scholarship: Applicants must be Native American, full-time students. Preference is given to individuals who will be Juniors or Seniors at the time the award is applied. Applicants must be members of a federally recognized tribe and have documentation of being ¼ or more Indian.

President's Leadership Initiative Awards:

The President’s Leadership Initiative Awards are one-year scholarships awarded to students on the basis of demonstrated leadership. Each applicant must submit a cover letter, leadership resume, an essay of 500 - 1,000 words, and 2 letters of recommendation (one of which must be from an Iowa State University faculty/staff member). All application materials are due to the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs (2350 Beardshear Hall) by noon on Friday, November 30, 2007. Awardees will be notified in early February, and scholarships will be applied for the 2007-2008 academic year bill ($2,000 award, divided between two semesters).
  • Charles F. Frederiksen Leadership Award: This award is open to an Iowa State University student residing in university housing who has served in a leadership role and demonstrated outstanding service to the university community. Recipients are selected on the basis of: contributions to on-campus student leadership; involvement in building community within university-owned housing; personal leadership ability; and scholarship.
  • David W. and Ellen J. Raisbeck Leadership Award: The President’s Leadership Initiative Award committee has identified the following criteria for this award: the recipient of this award must be a junior (at the time the award is applied) who demonstrates financial need (as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid) and is a leader in the Greek Community.
  • Gib and Nancy Stanek Leadership Award: The President’s Leadership Initiative Award committee has identified the following criteria for this award: the recipient of this award must be a sophomore (at the time the award is applied) who demonstrates leadership through community service.
  • Junior Leadership Award: The President’s Leadership Initiative Award committee has identified the following criteria for this award: the recipient must be a junior (at the time the award is applied) who demonstrates a progression of leadership development (breadth, depth, and impact of past leadership activities) and potential for future leadership.
  • Sandra and Lynn Davis Leadership Award: The President’s Leadership Initiative Award committee has identified the following criteria for this award: the recipient must be a senior (at the time the award is applied) who demonstrates leadership in any capacity.
  • Tze-Yen Teoh Sophomore Leadership Scholarship: The Tze-Yen Teoh Sophomore Leadership Award recognizes the leadership of an ISU sophomore within the university community. The President’s Leadership Initiative Award committee has identified the following criteria for this award: the recipient must be a sophomore (at the time the award is applied) who promotes the qualities of leadership and community service among Iowa State students and who reflects the compassionate, joyous, and thoughtful life of service that marked the life of Tze-Yen.
  • Carnot H. Thomas and Lillian M. Thomas Leadership Award: This award, funded by Carnot H. Thomas in honor of his mother and father, is open to any Iowa State University undergraduate in good standing. The recipient must still be an undergraduate student at the time the award is applied (Fall 2007). Recipients are selected on the basis of a combination of financial need, academic achievement, and professional potential.
  • W. Robert Parks and Ellen Sorge Parks Senior Scholarship: The President’s Leadership Initiative Award committee has identified the following criteria for this award: the recipient must be a senior (at the time the award is applied) who demonstrates excellence in scholarship, leadership, university involvement, and community service – as well as the promise of continued involvement with Iowa State as an alumnus or alumna.
