ARTICLE I. Aims and Activities of the Chapter.
It is the aim of Sigma Gamma Tau to recognize and honor the
individuals in the field of Aerospace engineering who are a credit to
their profession by virtue and scholarship, integrity, and achievement.
Sigma Gamma Tau also seeks to broaden the education of its members in
fields other than engineering and to create a spirit of loyalty and
fellowship among its members.
ARTICLE II. Chapter Government.
These by-laws serve as a supplement to the national constitution.
All chapter activities must satisfy both the national constitution
and the chapter by-laws.
A. Election of Officers and Faculty Advisor:
(1) The election of officers and the selection of a faculty advisor
shall be held the first meeting after the initiation of new members.
(2) Officers shall assume the duties of their offices at the first
meeting following their election.
(3) The faculty advisor shall be appointed by the department
chairman with the advice of the current cabinet.
ARTICLE III. Chapter Meetings.
(1) Meetings shall be called by the president.
(2) A quorum voting membership shall consist of three-fourths of the
active undergraduate membership.
ARTICLE IV. Chapter Finance.
(1) Dues are to be determined by the cabinet members.
(2) Dues are paid upon initiation.
ARTICLE V. Committees.
(1) There shall be no standing committees.
(2) Committees shall be appointed by the president and their duties
outlined at the time of their appointment.
ARTICLE VI. Eligibility Standards for Election to Membership.
A. Eligibility:
(1) An undergraduate student to be considered for membership, must
be in the upper one-third of their senior or upper quarter of their
junior Aerospace engineering class.
(2) The student must have accumulated at least 24 semester credits
at Iowa State University.
(3) The student must have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point
average (4.00 basis) based on hours taken at Iowa State University.
(4) Individuals who have a scholastic standing slightly below that
specified, but who are exceptionally qualified in other respects may be
elected by the unanimous vote of the eligible undergraduate voters
required for the election of members.
(5) Candidates must have shown, in addition to scholarship,
qualities of high moral character, an active interest in aerospace, and
an interest in the Society.
(6) All graduate aerospace engineering students are eligible for
membership with the nomination by any chapter officer.
(7) Candidates must have completed their initiation projects and
paid membership dues.
B. Officer Eligibility:
(1) All undergraduate members shall be eligible for election.
C. Officers and Duties:
The officers and the duties shall be as follows:
(1) President - The president will be the responsible agent of the
chapter. The president will call and preside over chapter meetings, and
will place in nomination those names of the individuals qualified for
membership as stated in Article VI.
(2) Vice-president - The vice-president will conduct chapter
meetings in absence of the president. The vice-president will assume the
responsibilities of the president if the office is vacated. The
vice-president shall assist in the duties of the president, and shall act
as program chairman.
(3) Secretary - The secretary will keep the roll and record book of
the chapter, keep the minutes of the chapter meetings up to date, and see
that all necessary correspondence is prepared.
(4) Treasurer - The treasurer will keep accurate and understandable
account of chapter funds.
ARTICLE VII. Procedure for Nomination and Election of Members.
A. Nominations:
(1) The names of those individuals meeting the above requirements
for the undergraduate membership will automatically be placed in nomination.
(2) There shall be a grade list of all aerospace engineering
students of Junior and Senior classification available at the time of
nomination.
B. Election Procedure:
(1) All voting will be by secret ballot.
(2) A separate vote shall be taken on each nominee.
(3) Votes will be counted by the chapter advisor and one other
member as appointed by the president.
(4) A quorum must be present.
(5) Additional voting procedures will be followed as outlined in
Article V of the national constitution.
ARTICLE VIII. Amendments.
(1) All adopted amendments must comply with the national constitution.
(2) A three-fourths majority vote of all active members must be
obtained to amend these by-laws.
