Roberta J. Vann

Roberta Vann (Ph.D. Indiana University in Bloomington) is Professor of TESL/Applied Linguistics at Iowa State University in Ames. She teaches courses in applied linguistics, including TESL methods and materials, sociolinguistics, and discourse analysis, and ESL where she specializes in academic literacy. Her publications include work on discourse analysis, learner styles and strategies, and methods and materials, the latter focusing on academic literacy for adults. A former Peace Corps volunteer (Ethiopia) and a Fulbright Senior Lecturer (University of Gdansk, Poland), she has also conducted teacher-training workshops in the former Yugoslavia and Czechoslavakia as well as in Syria, Peru, Thailand, and Taiwan. Between 1981-88 she directed the Intensive English and Orientation Program at Iowa State University and in 1987 was the project director of a USIA grant to provide in-service TEFL training for 25 South African educators. In the last 24 years she has served as major professor for 50+ students who now teach in countries around the world. She is currently Review Editor of TESOL Quarterly.
