We own 40 acres and rent 360 acres. We employ local custom operators to complete the field tasks that I cannot finish on the weekends. We like to plant some high-oil corn and food grade soybeans to evaluate the end-use market quality in order to determine what kind of end-use markets that we can satisfy with confidence. We have adopted the soil management strategies as recommended by the Brookside Farms Association, and have real evidence of more mellow soil during the summer months. Given that we do not have any comparison strips, we can not state, for certain, that we have increased our production potential with less cost. But we believe that we do have a cost efficient operation. This farm relates to my academic goal which is to create, or identify, a similar soil structure and demonstrate cost efficiency.
