Syllabus for Mathematics 317 B - Fall 2003
Instructor: Christian RoettgerCourse content
The content is standard linear algebra, but with an emphasis on understanding the theory as opposed to Math 307. An introduction to writing mathematical proofs is part of the course. The textbook is Elementary Linear Algebra by Andrilli/Hecker,
Harcourt/AP 2nd ed. We will cover chapters 1-6 of the textbook.
Key words are vectors, matrices, determinants, eigenvalues, eigenvectors,
linear systems, vector spaces, linear transformations, orthogonality, the
Gram-Schmidt-process.
If time allows, we will do part of chapter 7 and include one or two
applications from chapter 8.
Grades
There will be 3 one-hour in-class exams counting 15% each, written
homework counting 25% and a final exam counting 30%.
Your grade will be calculated from the sum of these percentages.
It will be at least that obtained from a 90/80/70/60 scale.
Class-room contribution will also be taken into account.
The deadlines
for written homework and the dates for in-class tests will be announced in class
and on the website.
If you cannot make a test, contact me BEFOREHAND via email or in class.
Should there be any change in these policies, the change will be announced in class and on the course website www.public.iastate.edu/~roettger/317
