Mathematics 317 - Test 1

Date/Time: Tuesday Sep 23, 12.10-1.00pm in Carver 0060 (usual classroom/time).

• proof by induction,
• proof by contradiction and contrapositive,
• converses and negations of statements,
• solving linear systems (possibly rank of systems, section 2.2)
• angles, lengths, dot products

Here is a Practice Exam. Model solutions have been transferred to WebCT. Notes on the practice exam. Problem 4 has an easy, short solution!!! Just look at the hint on the bottom of the exam page (which I, sadly, did not). Be careful setting up the equations for problem 6 - the number of nickels is larger than the difference of dimes and quarters, so the factor 2 needs to be where?

This is somewhat longer than the real one will be - I think you should be able to do this one in about 80-90 minutes. The real exam will only have 5 such questions. If you have still questions, see me today! Good luck for tomorrow!

Calculators, laptops, textbooks, notes are not allowed, but you may bring one help sheet (double-sided) with theorems, definitions/examples - whatever you like to have at hand. I recommend to have a watch at hand, even if you do not normally wear one (but I will announce the time occasionally).
