Examples and Experiences

Entering ISU as an open major has given me an opportunity to really explore my options, and thus the option to explore through a variety of different classes. The ones that I chose for my first semester have proved both interesting and fruitful - a promising sign towards discovering my major.

English 105H

A documentary-themed class, all work done in class expanded on the idea of documentary while teaching all forms of communication - written, oral, visual, and electronic.

Music 221 - Intro to Music Theory

A class concentrating on both the fundamentals of theory and the composition of species counterpoint, Music 221 has increased and applied my knowledge of music fundamentals and broadened my knowledge of the origins of composition.

Music 222 - Intro to Aural Theory

Music 222 reinforced the concepts learned in Music 221 by applying them to real music, including learning interval drills, scales, sight-singing, tonality drills, and melodic and rhythmic dictation.

French 101 - Elementary French

French not being offered at my high school, I decided that I would take it once I got to college. Learning how to say names of places and things, how to conjugate verbs, and how to pronounce the language has proved fun and fulfilling. This class has inspired me to minor in a foreign language.

Honors 121 - Freshman Honors Program

This seminar was a great way to get involved with the honors program and get to know other people that are in honors - the friendly atmosphere definitely made my transition to Iowa State a little easier.
