Participation in University Commencement Ceremonies
For Graduate Students Planning to Complete Degree Requirements during Summer Term
Criteria for Participation in the Spring Graduate College Commencement Ceremony:
Criteria will be monitored by the Graduate College to verify requirements are met.
- In good academic standing (not on academic probation).
- An approved “Committee Appointment” form on file with the Graduate College.
- An approved “Program of Study (POS)” form with at least the minimum number of required credits on file with the Graduate College.
- An “Application for Graduation” form for summer term submitted to the Graduate College.
- For students with a required final oral examination: A “Request for Final Oral Exam” form submitted to the Graduate College for an oral to be held prior to the last date for an oral examination in the summer term (date must be scheduled).
- For students in approved coursework only programs: A “Request for Graduation Check for Students in Programs Approved with no Final Oral Examination” form submitted to the Graduate College.
Criteria for Participation in the Fall Graduate College Commencement Ceremony:
All requirements for the degree must have been met during the summer term.
For Undergraduate Students Planning to Complete Degree Requirements during Summer Term
Criteria for Participation in the Spring Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony:
- Student must be in good academic standing. According to the Iowa State University Catalog, a student is in good academic standing unless that student has been academically dismissed. *
- Student must submit to the Office of the Registrar an Application for Graduation for summer semester. The nonrefundable graduation application fee will not be assessed until the tenth day of the semester of graduation.
- Student must be registered for those summer classes which upon successful completion will satisfy degree requirements.*
- Student must be within 12 credits of meeting degree requirements at the end of spring semester. Special requests will be considered by the Office of the Registrar if there is a demonstrated likelihood that all degree requirements will be met by the end of summer session.*
*Degree audits will be reviewed by the Office of the Registrar to verify items 1, 3 & 4 are met.
Criteria for Participation in the Fall Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony:
All requirements for the degree must have been met during the summer term.
Representation of students’ names in the commencement program
Students planning to complete degree requirements during summer term and approved to participate in the spring commencement ceremony will have their names listed in the commencement program with a symbol indicating “Projected summer graduate”. The fall commencement program will include an official list of all summer graduates.
