New Adviser Training

Are you a “new” adviser (3 years or less on the job)?  Are you in charge of training the advising staff in your unit?  UAAC is working hard to gather resources and offer interactive opportunities with other ISU advisers to assist in the training of “new” advisers.

Here are a few resources and opportunities that we encourage you to explore:

  • the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) provides numerous resources - printed materials, DVDs, etc. - on new adviser training.  Go to their website at www.nacada.ksu.edu to explore the resources you can purchase.
  • The ISU CELT Library (link www.celt.iastate.edu/teaching/library.html) has 20+ books, monographs, pocket guides, DVDs and CDs on various advising topics.  A great resource is “Thriving as a New Academic Adviser” – there are several books and other printed information available in this package.   Also consider the DVD entitled “Scenes for Learning and Reflection:  An Academic Advising Professional Development DVD” – this has 10 vignettes with actual advising scenarios to learn from!
  • New:  a mentoring program for FACULTY and STAFF will be offered starting Fall 2009, pairing interested “new” advisers with experienced ISU advisers.  If you are interested in serving as a mentor or, if you are a new adviser and would like to be part of this program, please contact Cindy Frederickson (cindyf@iastate.edu).
