Academic Advising Website
Improvements and updates have been made to the ISU Academic Advising web site. Committee members are to share this new site with their advising constituencies. Hulsebus noted that students and parents are finding and utilizing the advisor@iastate.edu, email site (designed for use by advisors only). There was discussion regarding where email information requests should go to be answered. (no action taken).
Academic Advisor Position Descriptions
Frederickson reported that last year’s UAAC report regarding descriptions for Advisor 1-4 was submitted to David Holger and Carla Espinoza April 2009 (report also included a professional development ladder ). Mike Otis from Human Resources will meet with Dr. Holger on Sept. 2 to discuss this report and then UAAC will meet again with HR for “next steps”.
UAAC Goals for the 2009-2010 Academic Year
Frederickson indicated that five years had passed since completion of the last all-university Advisor Survey, and that UAAC should prepare to reissue this survey in Fall 2010. A follow-up Student Survey of Advising should also be prepared to be reissued in Spring 2011.
There was discussion of the Admission Partnership Program and the advising workload created by this program. Caffrey noted that every college handles the APP adviser assignments differently. APP and it’s impact on advising load should be placed on the UAAC agenda for the year.
Adviser Assessment was a topic from last year’s UAAC agenda and should again be added to topics to be addressed this year. It is important to assess the impact of advising in regard to meeting institutional goals as well as in work performance.
Ask your constituency issues that are important to advising/student services – we will firm up UAAC 2009-10 goals/projects at the next meeting.
Future Committee Meetings and Subcommittees
It was agreed that UAAC would meet Thursday’s from 8:30 until 10 a.m. in a meeting room at the Memorial Union – Frederickson will set up a schedule and send out soon.
Next UAAC meeting, subcommittee work will be discussed – please consider what projects are of interest to you and if you would like to serve on a subcommittee.
Academic Advisor of the Year Display
Caffrey reported that UAAC will create a display in the Union featuring each College’s Advisor of the Year. Please get your College award winner’s name to Phil ASAP.
Guest Presentation: Pete Englin, Director of Residence, and Darin Wohlgemuth, Enrollment Services
Pete Englin and Darin Wohlgemuth shared information about the new Predictive Model prepared out of the Vice Pres of Student Affairs Office. This model will be used starting Fall 09 to identify first-year students who may be at risk of not being retained. The predictive model is based on factors such as: ACT, high school gpa and rank, amount of financial aid, cultural factors, etc. At-risk students will be identified and it is suggested that extra attention and encouragement be given as these predicted students experience their first semester at ISU. Names have been provided to each College office.
