The 1978 AL Season is over (but you probably already knew it). Been using BBW 3.5 to re-play the season with Duke Robinson managing all the teams except the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox and the Milwaukee Brewers. (Saved those for myself :-) Made out 3,4 or 5 lineups for each team and let the league manager do most of the lineup changes. Kept a closer eye on the starting rotaions to make sure everyone got about the right number of starts. And started the project in the middle of September. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx While the 1st half of the season was real tight, the 2nd half saw the Yankees slump and the Milwaukee Brewers dominate the league winning 103 games and capturing the title by 5 and 1/2 games over New York and 8 over Boston. Note:'Real' season stats in (). Standings: East Milwaukee Brewers 103 ( 93) - 59 (69) + 5.5 ( -6.5) New York Yankees 97 (100) - 64 (63) - 5.5 ( +1.0) Boston Red Sox 95 ( 99) - 67 (64) - 8.0 ( -1.0) Baltimore Orioles 91 ( 90) - 71 (71) -12.0 ( -6.0) Detriot Tigers 83 ( 86) - 79 (76) -20.0 (-13.5) Cleveland Indians 58 ( 69) -103 (90) -44.5 (-29.0) Toronto Blue Jays 50 ( 59) -112 (102) -53.0 (-40.0) The difference might have been 1-run games. The Brewers won 28 and lost 19 1-run games while New York was just 18-23 and Boston 25-31. A team-by-team analysis follows with particular attention to the big 3: Milwaukee, New York and Boston. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx The Brewers were a lot of fun to manage. Up and down the lineup there was a nice mixture of speed, average and power. They made a lot of key hits, made the big plays and got the pitching when they needed it. Oliver led the offense with a .325 batting average driving in 105 runs. Bonds hit 26 HRs and knocked in 110. Texas got big seasons from Bump Wills, Zisk and Hargrove. If it were any other season 104 games would be more than enough to win it. Jenkins had a great season winning his first 16 games before getting a loss and ending the season with a 24-3 record. Matlack was also impressive with 22 wins and only 7 losses. And Cormer chipped in with an excellent 15-5 mark. Cleveland did a good job as the closer. Looks like everyone was taking lessons from Carew as Minnesota led the league in hitting with a .288 batting average. Cubbage and Ford both hit much better in the replay than in the 'real' season. Zach and Erickson both won 20 games for the Twins, but by far the most remarkable pitcher was Mike Marshall. He easily led the league with 45 saves, almost 1/2 the Twins wins, and only a 0.93 ERA. Bostock, Lansford and Jackson all batted in the .290's. But the Angels lacked the firepower and the average to compete with the big boys. One of the biggest disapointments in the entire replay was Nolan Ryan's sub-par season. He had the damn 'W' control rating and it really hurt. The only real effective starter for the Angels was Tanana, and he didn't live up to his potential. Carty hit 31 HR and 103 RBIs to provide some power. But the A's were next to last in fielding making 154 errors, and lacked the over-all batting average to win very many games. Langford was the A's top winning pitcher with 10 wins. But Keough was a mainstay as was Johnson. Sosa had a good year out of the pen with 21 saves and a 1.88 ERA. Roberts slacked off in his batting average, as did Paciorek, but Stinson had a very good season hitting 24 dingers. No pitcher won more than 9 games. The team's 5.23 ERA was terrible. Only 4 pitchers had ERA less than 5. You are not going to have a very sucessful season with such a pitching staff.
