1st 1967 Re-Play
It was strange drafting Tom Seaver on to the Kansas City A's team, but he didn't help them much as the A's ended up dead last in the Western Division for the 8th straight Re-Play season. St Louis had the leagues best record, beating out Detroit by a single game for the first seed. Cardinals had four everyday players with batting averages .316 or higher; 1B Orlando Cepeda (.331, 25HRs), CF Curt Flood (.331), C Tim McCarver (.321) and Lou Brock (.316, 26 HRs). The Tigers led the league in HRs with four players topping the 20 HR mark, Kaline, Horton, Haller and McAullife. Earl Wilson was the ace of the Tigers pitching staff with 23 wins against just 6 losses. The Minnesota Twins captured the Wild-Card berth with 95 wins. Harmon Killebrew led the league in home runs with 48, runs scored with 119 and tied MVP Ron Santo for the most RBIs at 118.Twin team mate Jim Kaat won the CYA with an outstanding 29-7 record and a 2.34 ERA and a league leading 263 Ks. The closest divisional race was in the East where the Philadelphia Phillies led by 8 games as late as September 4th. But they faltered down the stretch dropping 4 of 4 to the Pirates and winning just 8 of the next 21. Pirates, meanwhile, went on a tear winning 18 and losing just 5 as the two teams found themselves tied at the end of the season, forcing a one game playoff, loser goes home. Al McBean came into the game in relief with the bases loaded and no outs in the 7th inning. He put down the Phillies 1-2-3, then pitched a perfect 8 and Roy Face pitched a perfect 9th as the Pirates stole the Eastern Division.|
